Training in management / how to apply
This page provides general information about training and applying for training.
Introduction
Whatever the sector of management, gaining management qualifications while on-the-job improves career prospects and performance greatly and is encouraged in most healthcare organisations. What follows here, is general information about training and applying for training. Training will vary for each type of management. More details appear under the relevant career area (click
here).
Supervisor and assistant manager posts
Training may be available on-the-job or in-service to enter some of these posts. A range of organisations, including the Institute of Healthcare Management (IHM) and the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), offer general supervisory level courses. Many training courses are designed to be done while in employment, including NVQs and the IHM/ILM Introductory Award and Award for First Line Managers. Courses more tailored to a specific management area will usually be offered by the professional body for that area (e.g. the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
Medical management training
The British Association of Medical Managers (BAMM) provides training and development for staff in medical management.
Management posts that can be entered directly
Some posts can be entered directly from outside of the NHS and do not require a knowledge or experience of the NHS.
Graduate Management Training Schemes
The Graduate Management Training Scheme is an intensive programme, combining early responsibility in real jobs with management education. It offers the opportunity to specialise in general, financial, informatics or human resource management. The scheme includes a thorough induction and orientation to the NHS, work placements and, on the General Management Training Scheme, the opportunity to spend time working with other healthcare organisations in the UK. Trainees on the General Management Scheme are also given the opportunity to gain postgraduate qualifications in health care or general management. On the Financial Management Scheme, trainees study for professional accountancy qualifications (e.g. Chartered Institute of Public Finance Accountancy), on the Informatics Management Scheme trainees study for the PG Dip Health Informatics and on the Human Resources Management Scheme, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) qualifications.
For more information on these schemes please visit www.nhsgraduates.co.uk, where you can apply on-line.Middle management training
In-service management training is available to individuals already employed in the NHS. The Institute of Healthcare Managements "Managing Health & Social Care Programme" is a flexible in-service programme of management training, leading to NVQ Level 4 and 5.
For people coming into management from backgrounds with little specific management training, whether they be administrative, clinical or social care, the IHMs practical and flexible management training course, the "Certificate in Managing in Health and Social Care" (CertMHSC), is particularly useful. This qualification is for:
- First line managers wishing to dramatically develop or consolidate their management skills
- Clinicians moving into operational management for the first time
- Senior managers wishing to update their skills
Other formal healthcare management courses are also available. Many of these have been validated by the IHM and most enable full membership.
For further information on IHM courses, contact the IHM on 020 7620 1030 or e-mail: enquiries@ihm.org.uk
NHS Gateway to Leadership Programme
This is a fast track to senior management programme designed to recruit and develop a cohort of talented and experienced managers who have the potential to progress to senior leadership roles in the NHS. Recruits are hosted in NHS organisations (acute hospital trusts, primary care, mental health and specialist trusts as well as strategic health authorities) and placed directly into senior management roles.
To be eligible, applicants need to be graduates (minimum 2:2 degree) with substantial management experience, ideally in a complex operational environment. This programme is not aimed at those who have already completed an NHS graduate training scheme.
For further details contact the Gateway to Leadership Programme on 0845 302 7999 or visit their website: www.nhsgatewaytoleadership.co.uk.
