Schools competition 2012/13

NHS Careers is delighted to announce the winners of the 2012-13 Step into the NHS schools’ competition!

Winning entry

The winning entry was produced by Annabel Dersy, Klara Inman-Barnes and Margarita Spektor from St Catherine's School in Bramley, Guildford who chose to look at the role of a physiotherapist for their entry.

The students impressed the judges with their understanding of physiotherapy and with their creativity and hard work. Their comprehensive campaign included a Twitter account, poster, video advertisement and an interview with two physiotherapists, which featured a song they wrote and performed especially for their entry. The girls even produced a special mascot to promote the role. Click here to watch the winning video advertisement.

New SEN category

This year, for the first time in the competition's five year history, there was an additional special educational needs (SEN) category, which was introduced in response to feedback from teachers that the competition should be more accessible to students with special educational needs. A student at The Kings School in Pontefract, Wakefield, was the national prize winner in this category with her chosen role of a midwife. Her poster advert impressed the judges with various images of everything that midwifery means to her.

Prizes

Annabel, Klara and Margarita each won the top national prize of a netbook computer.

Students at the following schools were selected as regional winners and each received an Amazon voucher to recognise their outstanding entries.

The 2012/13 competition

The 2012/13 competition attracted over 670 entries involving over 1,660 students from across England. The competition was judged by an expert panel made up of:

  • Dr Deirdre Hughes, national careers specialist in policy, research and practice
  • Sue Covill, NHS Employers
  • Daniel Mortimer, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
  • Carol Allen, school improvement adviser (ICT and SEN), North Tyneside Council
  • Alan Simmons, NHS Careers.

Aimed at year 8 and 9 students, the competition is an annual event which encourages students to think about career opportunities, develop job seeking skills and make informed decisions about important GCSE or diploma choices. Students are challenged to select one of the careers available in the NHS and, working individually or in groups of up to four, to create a job advertisement and job descropition for that role.
