Returning to the NHS

The NHS has been part of your past, perhaps you are interested in it being part of your future.

The opportunities for staff who wish to return to practice vary depending on locality, profession and how long you’ve been away. Often you will find you need to update your registration and you may need to undertake a refresher course. Sometimes there is financial assistance available for these schemes but this will depend on your local trust and their workforce needs.

Since you last worked in the NHS, there may have been many changes in how healthcare is organised and delivered. But whether you left 2 years or 20 years ago, the difference you can make to people's lives is still as important as ever. As well as improving patient care much that is changing is intended to improve working lives within the NHS. There's a greater emphasis on teamwork that crosses old professional boundaries to deliver seamless care. There's a drive to increase flexibility in working hours, so it's easier to combine work with other commitments. There's more support for staff, and more opportunities to develop and acquire new skills. You can read more about this in our "working in the NHS" pages.

To find out how you can return to the NHS, contact the HR department in your local primary care trust, strategic health authority or acute trust. You can find your local trust contact details by visiting www.nhs.uk.
